Going green in spring & summer
Here are some ideas to green up!
- Start a compost bin or pile
Why throw stuff into the trash where it will sit and take up valuable landfill space, when you can throw it into a bin or pile in your backyard and turn it into a beautiful rich soil to use in your yard and gardens? it’s truly amazing that organic waste will turn into something that is chalk full of nutrients that you can use to help nourish your yard, garden and body!
- Set up a rain barrel to capture rain water
Once you have your rain barrel set up, it will capture free water for you to use to water your gardens, outdoor plants or lawn. It’s a great way to conserve water and save money at the same time!
- Plant a garden
You don’t have to have a lot of space to grow your own food. Start your garden small, with only the staples your family most enjoy! There is nothing more green or sustainable than growing your own food to feed your family! (this a great place to use your compost and rain barrels)

Going green in fall & winter
- Continue to compost
Fallen leaves, the stuff out of your gutter, carved pumpkins add them all to your pile. This will all be used for compost for next spring.
- Clean & store summer equipment
Keeping your equipment and outdoor items in better shape helps it to last longer, which will keep it out of the landfill.
- Adjust your thermostat
Adjust your thermostat one degree higher in the summer & one degree cooler in the winter. Each degree less will save about 10% on your energy usage.
